Important Information on Remote Learning at NMS for January 4-15, 2021
Due to a steady rise in COVID-19 cases and quarantines, Lex 2 has decided to make a temporary shift to remote learning for the two weeks of classes after break, January 4-15, 2021. Students who normally attend school in person will return to in person attendance on Tuesday, January 19. The Virtual Academy will continue its regular operations.
Students will focus only on core academic classes (math, science, ELA, social studies) during these two weeks. Students will not complete assignments for exploratory classes (arts, health, PE, foreign language, other electives). The exception to exploratory classes is Spanish 1. This class is a high school credit course and will have required attendance and assignments in order to receive credit. Those enrolled in special education, speech therapy, math/reading intervention and/or ESOL classes will receive instruction during regular class times through Google Meets or other platforms, as scheduled by the teachers.
Remote learning will be available in two forms during this time - live ("syncronous") and in a self-paced form ("asyncronous"). Teachers will deliver instruction live for 30 minutes daily per class period through Google Meets, which can be accessed through Google Classroom. Teachers also will post assignments in Google Classroom to be completed independently by students. To better help parents prepare for the remote learning days, student assignments will be posted on Google Classroom by 5 pm of the day preceding instruction. Below is a chart showing times for live instruction by class period and grade level. Students are expected to submit work daily and to attend the Google Meets.
Students should frequently visit the Google Classrooms of their teachers for access to Google Meets and important information about assignments. Attendance in the live Google Meet sessions is strongly encouraged. However, we understand that everyone faces unique challenges at home with schedules and time availability. In order to be marked present for remote learning days, students must attempt to engage in each of their core classes daily by submitting assignments and/or participating in the Google Meets. Students without any online presence will be marked absent for that day in each class where there was no online activity. "Online presence" means participation in a Google Meet and/or attempts made to complete assignments. If the work still is not submitted by the next in person attendance day, there will be no change to the unexcused absence.
