Welcome!
My name is Kendrick Kerr. I was born in Ohio, spent some time in Mississippi, and was raised in South Carolina. I lived in the Charleston area for 20 years and have now been in the Midlands for the last 20. I currently enjoy life on a small 2.5-acre hobby farm in West Columbia. I also love to travel and recently returned from a trip to the Czech Republic. I am learning the Czech language in order to communicate with my Czech family.
This is my 31st year in education. Throughout this amazing journey, I’ve had the opportunity to teach 6th, 7th, and 8th grade math, science, language arts, and social studies. However, my true passion is teaching science. I have participated in NASA’s Urban Community Enrichment Program and the NASA Educators’ Workshop. My students have explored the effects of microgravity on plants with real scientists and collected weather data through the GLOBE Program. They’ve also studied genetics alongside USC professors and the Center for Science Education at the University of South Carolina.
At my previous school, my students participated in the South Carolina Green Step Schools initiative, earning several awards for their work on environmental and ecological projects, including developing a school garden and maintaining a bluebird trail.
As a constructivist teacher, I believe students learn best by actively engaging in hands-on, minds-on experiences. In my classroom, we use the textbook to build ramps—not just to read! Our class motto is “Learning by Doing,” and I strive to help students explore the magic and mystery of the world around them.
This year, students will use Google Classroom as the central hub for class assignments. Grades, however, will be posted in ParentPortal. Students will gain access to their Google Classrooms once they receive their Chromebooks in the first days of school. Parents with an email address on file will receive a Google Classroom invitation that allows them to receive weekly summaries of their child’s progress.
Please feel free to reach out to me at [email protected] with any questions or concerns.
Be well!
